Back a few years ago when my clutch star spring started shedding arms I looked at buying one of those fancy clutch-holding tools. Being frugal (read cheapskate) I couldn’t see buying something I could make. I’ve made my own tank bra, valve adjust tool, headlight cover, helmet bags, modified my Aerostich suit, and so on, but that’s another story or two. What I ended up doing in this case was drilling two holes in large "C" shaped Vise Grip jaws at the correct point to clamp the grooves on the clutch basket. I tapped the holes at ¼ x 20 NC. I used two bolts about 1 ½ inch long and screwed them into the holes. Two nuts keep the screws in place. Brace the Vice Grips against something on the frame, foot peg, bolt, whatever, depending on if you are tightening up or loosening things. Worked just fine, left the screws in the jaws and I can still use the Vise Grips for other things such as welding.
