Some pictures for now, I'm still fitting this thing together inside a 20mm ammo can....
Compressor sitting on 20mm ammo can lid. The filter is a small Campbell-Hausfield mounted with a 3/8" to 1/4"adapter. A rubber sponge pad is glued to the compressor to cushion the plastic filter jar against vibrations and bumps. I'm thinking about mounting the compressor upside down on the lid. |
Compressor inside ammo can, seems like a lot of extra room, may try to find smaller can or build my own box. If I leave it in this can I may mount it on the lid so it will be upside down in the can. (See item above) This would make it easier to pull the compressor and the hoses and power cables would be in the bottom of the can instead of laying on top of the compressor. Still mulling it over at this point - Nov 4, 2001 |
Compressor wires - Didn't like the way the wires were coming out of the compressor. Too easy to stress them or break one off at this point. I took a vinyl cap, punched a hole for the wire, gooped it full of blue RTV and slid it against the compressor body with more RTV to reinforce the wire at the compressor exit point. I will rigid mount a power connector so the wires don't get moved around. Picture's a little fuzzy. |
Compressor mounted on wooden rack. Rack raises compressor about an inch or so off the can bottom. Cut "half moon" section out of supports, glued on rubber padding, used large hose clamps (4" to 7") to secure compressor to mount. Also put small rubber pad under front of compressor for better support and clamped it down tight. Still have to rig up electrical connections. Unit runs either way so hookup (negative/positive) doesn't seem important. I just picked one wire to be the hot lead, the other is negative. |
Compressor wooden rack bottom view shows "half moon" pieces cut from top supports used to provide clamping surface for hose clamps. |
Mounted Compressor on rack on floor of box. Doesn't seem so small now as it's raised off the floor of the ammo box a couple inches. Plenty of room for hose, power cable (yet to be made) gauges, etc., etc. |
Had to mount quick disconnect fitting to swivel to allow hose to clear box. |
Hose now swivels to keep from kinking hose and to clear box. Small regulator in bottom of box showed 60 psi when hooked to hose end. Runs nice and quiet inside box, little or no vibration. |
| Compressor was purchased from Surplus Center in Lincoln, Nebraska - part number 4-1484 1/3 hp, 12A @ 24VDC |
