Radio Van Project....Tire Rack Assembly

2001
Steps and Drawings
What follows is an attempt to layout the dimensions and steps I used in building a pivoting rack for the rear of my Unimog. Using closeup pictures, the drawings and descriptions as a guide one can build a similar device. Many photos are back on the Tire Rack page .
Here is Drawing 1.
And here is Drawing 2.
Close up of pivot bolt and some welds here during early stages of metal construction.
Close up of right lower leg including gusset and pivot bolt before painting.
Close up photo of bolts on angle iron. Spacing of bolts through the Radio box lip is only critical if they interfere with the bolts going from the "L" bracket down through the support channel. Meausre twice, drill once so to speak! Drawing 1 shows the spacing I used. YMMV!
Close up photo of threaded rod/conduit assmebly here before painting. You can also see the pivot bolt and gusset welded to outer section of "U" shaped frame. Choice of another material such as square channel might dictate alternate methods of reinforcement.
Tire lock can be used hooked from the bottom or the top of anchor loop. Weight of lock nut handle will keep it from rotating loose.
